A4GNT(Alpha-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase) encodes a protein from the glycosyltransferase 32 family. The enzyme catalyzes the transfer of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) to two core O-polysaccharides is a necessary step in the synthesis of type III mucin, which is specifically produced in the stomach, duodenum and pancreatic duct and can prevent gastric adenocarcinoma associated with inflammation. Studies have shown that gastric glandular mucin α-GlcNAc expression is missing in A4gnt knockout mice, indicating that A4GNT is the only enzyme responsible for α-GlcNAc biosynthesis.
