Androgen receptor (AR) belongs to the steroid receptor in the nuclear receptor superfamily. AR generally consists of four domains: n-terminal transcriptional activation region (NTD), DNA binding region (DBD), hinge region and ligand binding region (LBD). AR also known as NR3C4, is a type of nuclear receptor that binds to any of the activated androgens, including testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in the cytoplasm, and then translocates into the nucleus. AR mediates the role of androgens and steroids in the expression of male phenotypes during sex differentiation, the development and maintenance of secondary masculinity. Deficiency of androgen receptor can lead to disorder of sex development (DSD).
