Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4A), also known as NR2A1, is a nuclear receptor encoded by HNF4A gene in humans, which binds to DNA to form a homodimer. The encoded protein controls the expression of several genes, including hepatocyte nuclear factor 1 α (a transcription factor that regulates the expression of multiple liver genes). The mutation of this gene is related to single gene autosomal dominant non-insulin dependent type I diabetes mellitus. The defect of HNF4A is the cause of type 1 diabetes in young people (MODY1).
