MECP2 (Methyl-CpG Binding Protein 2) helps regulate gene expression by modifying chromatin. MECP2 protein is found in cells throughout the body, especially in brain cells. In the brain, the MECP2 protein is important for many types of cell function. The protein may play a role in maintaining synapses between neurons and intercellular communication occurs between neurons. Many genes regulated by MECP2 protein are known to play a role in normal brain function, especially in synaptic maintenance. The researchers believe that MECP2 protein may also be involved in the molecular processing of mRNA, which can be used as a genetic blueprint for protein production. By cutting and rearranging mRNA molecules in different ways, MECP2 proteins can control the production of different versions of certain proteins. This process is called alternative splicing. In the brain, alternative splicing of proteins is essential for normal communication between neurons and may also be necessary for other types of brain cell function. Diseases associated with MECP2 include  Rett Syndrome and Mental Retardation, X-Linked, Syndromic.
