MYC is a regulatory gene and proto-oncogene family that encodes transcription factors. The Myc family consists of three related human genes: c-myc (Myc), l-myc (Mycl) and n-myc (Mycn). C-myc (known as myc) is the first gene found in this family because it is homologous to the viral gene v-myc. The four-helix structure of C-Myc and Max binds to DNA sequences, such as the E-box motif, which controls the transcription of specific genes. These genes are reported to be involved in chromatin modification, DNA replication, ribosome and mitochondrial biogenesis, which influence a variety of cellular processes, including proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and metabolism.
