NFKB1 (Nuclear Factor Kappa B Subunit 1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NFKB1 gene. The protein encoded by NFKB1 gene consists of 968 amino acids with a molecular weight of about 105 kDa,. It is considered to be the precursor of p50 subunit of NF-kB complex. In the N-terminal region of NFKB1, there is a Rel homologous domain, (RHD), which consists of about 300 amino acids, which is responsible for DNA binding, dimerization with other members of the Rel family and interaction with IkB proteins. NFKB1 seems to have dual functions, such as retaining the cytoplasm of attached NF-kappa-B proteins through p105 and generating p50 through co-translation. Diseases associated with NFKB1 include Immunodeficiency, Common Variable, and Common Variable Immunodeficiency.
