The PNOC (Prepronociceptin) gene encodes a proprotein, which is hydrolyzed to produce a variety of protein products. These products include Nociceptin, Nocistatin and Orphanin FQ2 (OFQ2). Nociceptin, also known as orphan protein FQ, is a 17-amino acid neuropeptide that binds to Nociceptin receptors, induces increased pain, and may additionally regulate body temperature, learning and memory, and hunger. Another product of encoded proproteinogen, norcistatin, may inhibit the effect of noxetine.
