The PRND (Prion Like Protein Doppel) gene includes two exons separated by one intron. Exon 2 encodes for the Doppel protein. The gene is located on chromosome 20 and located at about 20kbp downstream of the gene encoding cellular prion protein. The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchored glycoprotein, which mainly exists in the testis. Mutations in the gene may lead to neurological disorders. PRND is known to be involved in the susceptibility of prion diseases.
