PSENEN (presenilin enhancer, γ-secretase subunit) is a component of γ-secretase protein complex, which is necessary for the intramembrane processing of some type I transmembrane proteins, such as Notch protein and β-amyloid precursor protein. PSENEN is widely expressed in leukocyte, lung, placenta, small intestine, liver, kidney, spleen and thymus, skeletal muscle, heart and brain. Notch signaling is essential for the normal maturation and division of hair follicle cells and other types of skin cells. The processing of β-amyloid precursor protein produces neurotoxic amyloid beta peptide, which is the main component of senile plaque associated with Alzheimer's disease.
