SGK1 (serum/glucocorticoid regulated kinase 1) belongs to a subfamily of serine/threonine kinases. The kinase plays an important role in cell stress response, activating some potassium, sodium and chloride channels, suggesting that it is involved in the regulation of cell survival, neuronal excitability and renal sodium excretion. High levels of expression of the gene may lead to diseases such as hypertension and diabetic nephropathy.
