Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is a protein encoded by the human gene EEF2. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the GTP-binding translation extension factor family. EEF2 mediates the translocation step of elongation, which catalyzes the movement of tRNA from ribosomal A site to P site by GTP hydrolysis. EEF2 phosphorylates through its only known kinase eEF2K, which destroys the growth of peptides and inhibits the synthesis of general proteins. In common bacterial infections, eukaryotic extension factor 2 is the target of inhibition of diphtheria toxin and exotoxin A. eEF2 as a drug target in cancer, and in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. It is important to develop specific and potent eEF2K small molecular inhibitors for cell-based research, especially using preclinical models of the disease.
