PRKAA1 (Protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit alpha 1), also known as AMPK α1, is an energy sensor that plays a key role in regulating cell energy metabolism. AMPK α1 is a catalytic subunit of heterotrimeric AMPK protein with a length of 548 amino acids. The key switch to activate this protein is the change in the AMP/ATP ratio. AMPK plays a role through direct phosphorylation of metabolic enzymes, and plays a longer-term role through the phosphorylation of transcriptional regulatory factors. It can also regulate cell polarity by remodeling actin cytoskeleton. AMPK proteins are dysfunctional in several human diseases, including diabetes and metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases and many types of cancer.
